Hello and Happy Friday! Oh my, what lovely messages I got from so many of you last week about my wedding!! I was so touched. I think I replied to you all, but I might have missed one or two, so I apologise for that. I’ve added a little wedding photo at the end of this newsletter in case you want a peek 👀
There’s still a discount for signing up to Monday (see below), and it looks like Slack is jumping on the discount bandwagon too so be sure to check that out.
This week I was reading a really interesting article about companies and their appetite for new graduates. I’d hate to be a graduate these days, with the horror stories of being interviewed by robots and such, and then being condemned for having no real-world experience. You couldn’t make it up!!
Finally, I’ve stumbled across probably the best tech guide for EAs that I’ve ever seen. So if you don’t know your Toggl from your Trello, or your Zapier from your Zoho, then you need this in your life.
I hope you’ve had a great week. Just one more week of January left - we’re nearly there!!
Yvette

In January a lot of us look at training and certifications that we might want to commit to throughout the year. Of course, planning is excellent! Monday.com are offering 20% off all online certification programs until 31st Jan, so if your company uses (or is thinking of using) Monday, then you might want to consider adding this to your list. I’m 2x Monday certified and it helps a lot when showing that you can use it. Use code NewYears20 when you book
Does your company ask people to pay for their own travel expenses up front and then claim them back? This was quite normal back in the day, but certainly not anymore. Newer companies might be prioritising things over corporate credit cards or a travel management solution, but that could put undue financial pressure on employees. TravelPerk has a great blog on this topic which could help you broach the subject with your boss if you need to
Quite horrifyingly, a new survey has found that employers would rather use AI than hire a recent graduate. One of the reasons for this appears to be because they “don’t have real-world experience” which is great, but how do you get that experience in the first place?? This was quite an interesting read, and immediately made me think about volunteering opportunities and how they can benefit you even if you have that real world experience.
Employee benefits. What are they like at your company? According to the EA Salary Survey, there wasn’t a correlation at all between benefits and job satisfaction, suggesting that whatever is offered doesn’t make any difference to how much you like your job (note: the only thing which DID correlate to job satisfaction was salary). So this article from PA Life was interesting, suggesting that employers need to make their benefits more appealing. Perhaps they should ditch them and just pay people more? What do you think?
You might have seen the noise around people’s social media accounts automatically starting to follow the new President and Vice President. No, this isn’t another U2 album situation (where Apple put it on everyone’s iTunes account back in 2014) but a normal action that is taken whenever a new President is sworn in. If you were following the last President, you’ll still follow the current one, regardless of your political views.
Looks like Slack is offering 50% off, according to their latest YouTube video. So if your company is thinking of signing up, it might be worth pushing it through a little quicker to make the most of this offer.
The EA Campus has what I think is probably one of the best tech guides for EAs that I’ve ever seen. There are dozens and dozens of tools listed out, each with a description of what it does. So if your company is asking you to make some process improvements, you need to consult this list. If your company is implementing something new, you should consult this list. You need to bookmark this article so that you can find it again, because you definitely will!!

Each month we’re going to be deep diving into a software platform or piece of tech that you might use, and we’ll give you a Top Tip each week for it.
For January, we’re going to be looking at Salesforce. I know this is a beast of a system, so at the end of Jan, I’ll be sharing a link to the guide I use the most when I have a Salesforce question.
If you are the admin for your Salesforce instance, I’d highly recommend restricting who can create reports. If everyone can, you’ll end up with quite literally thousands of reports and it will take an army to sort them out. Limit the number of people who can create them
Sign up to the Salesforce Trailhead to learn more about the tool. Salesforce has an extensive learning platform where you can practice in sandbox environments and earn badges and points when you complete lessons. The best bit? It’s completely free!
Enable inline editing for your list views and reports. This means you can make edits to your records without having to open up each individual record. It’s ideal for adding in missing information, or updating statuses (perhaps on your weekly sales call)
